Man arrested during peace protest outside Blackburn Barclays

Protesters were once again outside Barclays Bank in Darwen Street on April 20 to highlight the ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel.

A photograph sent to the Lancashire Telegraph showed a man on the floor surrounded by four police officers on a patch of grass close to the protest site.

Police said a man in his 40s from Oldham was arrested for a section 5 public order offence and was given a penalty notice for disorder.

Lancashire Police added the man was not one of the protesters but was shouting and swearing at them.

The group of protesters made up of men, women, and children, held banners outside Barclays as part of ongoing protests, which have been seen outside the Blackburn branch numerous times this year.

Over previous months, protesters have been highlighting the links between Barclays and other companies in Israel.

They said the bank ‘provides more than £3bn in loans and underwriting to companies whose weapons, components, and military technology have been used in Israel’s armed violence against Palestinians.’

Protesters held signs reading slogans such as ‘This is not the time to be silent’ and ‘Ceasefire Now.’

Others aimed at the bank said ‘Invest with Barclays and kill a child’ and ‘Barclays fund apartheid.’
