The M57 motorway has been closed between J3 and J2 for the 'foreseeable future' after a serious incident.

Earlier this morning, the North West Motorway Police reported a police led incident and closed the motorway from Junction 3 Huyton and Junction 4 Knowsley.

A spokesman for the Motorway Police said: "For everyone's information the M57 north and south bound between j3 and j2 will be closed for the foreseeable future due to a serious incident, Police and National Highways patrols on scene, please take alternative routes."

The National Highways North West are at the scene and urged people to avoid the area as police work.

A statement read: "The M57 in Merseyside is closed in both directions between J2 (Huyton) and J3 (Knowsley) following a serious collision.

"Emergency services including North West Motorway Police Group are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management."

Diversions are in place with long delays on the motorway due to the incident.
