A man who smashed caravan windows during a family row left the scene but returned and demanded that police tell him who had "grassed him up."

Blackburn Magistrates' Court heard Terence Joseph Maughan used vile racist language towards a police officer and was arrested.

Maughan, 21, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to racially aggravated harassment. He was ordered to pay £100 compensation.

Scott Parker, prosecuting, said police were called by Chloe Maughan regarding an incident at her caravan.

Windows had been smashed after the defendant had argued with her husband.

"Police were taking details when the defendant returned to the scene," said Mr Parker.

"He admitted smashing the windows with a spade and wanted to know who had 'grassed' on him. He told the officer to shut up in a racist way."

Jonathan Taylor, mitigating, said there had been a dispute at the Accrington caravan park where the defendant was living at the time.

"Nothing that had happened would have led to criminal charges," said Mr Taylor.

"He remembers arguing that he shouldn't be arrested because of the behaviour of other people in the caravan park.

"He was frustrated and said some very hurtful things to the officer."
