A borough's cricketers are to get more chances to play despite poor weather.

Four new artificial grass wickets are to be created at Burnley's Towneley Park.

The new surfaces are revealed in a report by Burnley Council's health and wellbeing boss Cllr Jack Launer.

In it he tells the authority's Full Council meeting on Wednesday: "Funding of approximately £48,000 has been offered by the English Cricket Board for the installation of four artificial grass wickets in Towneley Park.

"These allow cricketers to enjoy playing on a more consistent playing surface, with fewer games cancelled due to inclement weather and the time that staff

spend preparing wickets for games will be significantly reduced.

"It is hoped that the new wickets will be available for play mid-summer."
