They had survived for more than 120 years but when this photo was taken in 1974, this row of cottages was in a poor state.

Lancashire Telegraph: Everton cottages, Blackburn 1974

The cottages at Everton off Roman Road in Blackburn had lain empty for a while and vandals had started to target them.

But salvation was at hand. They had recently been bought and renovation work was due to start shortly after the photo was taken.

The cottages represented a tangible link back to Blackburn’s textile heritage and as a result had been Grade II listed. Built around the 1840s they had originally been occupied by handloom weavers - the original cottage industry.
