A man has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage following an incident at a mosque in Burnley.
Police were called to the Shah Jalal Mosque in Burleigh Street at around 10.30am yesterday (April 3).
Cllr Shah Hussain (Burnley Independent Group, Daneshouse with Stoneyholme) said a family were abused by a man while they were preparing for a funeral.
A police spokesperson said: "We have this afternoon (April 4) arrested a 38-year-old man from Burnley on suspicion of criminal damage. He remains in custody.
"We are continuing to appeal for information. Email forcecontrolroom@lancashire.police.uk or call 101, quoting log 369 of April 3."
Cllr Hussain said a man entered the mosque shortly after 9am on Wednesday and damaged areas towards the front of the building.
A man also smashed two windows above office doors and tore up a book containing religious scripts, the councillor said.
In a press release issued by Cllr Hussain on Wednesday afternoon, he said the "appalling act of aggression" underscored the "urgent need for solidarity."
