Huge silk panels exploring the story of Creation in the Bible are drawing visitors to Blackburn Cathedral.

Textile artist Jacqui Parkinson has laboured on 12 enormous displays under the banner of 'Threads through Creation'.

And her outstanding efforts will be on show at the cathedral until April 14 as part of a UK tour of places of worship.

Some of the textile panels are massive - standing around eight feet high and up to four feet wide.

A Blackburn Cathedral spokesman said: "‘Threads through Creation’ is a spectacular sequence of 12 huge textile panels.

"It’s an exuberant retelling of the creation story in the book of Genesis, a retelling which many visitors will find both moving and breath-taking.

"Viewers are treated to a wonderful variety of colours, shapes, patterns – and of course lots of creatures

Jacqui has used layers of silk, hand-dyed materials, metallic leathers and gold leaf, miles of thread for the panels – and an estimated eight million or so stitches.

Before the exhibition launched the Dean of Blackburn, the Very Reverend Peter Howell-Jones, said: “People enjoy the peace and beauty of the cathedral, and now is a particularly good time to visit. Jacqui Parkinson’s exhibition introduces extraordinary colour and pattern into the creation story.

"Whatever your age or background, you’ll find inspiration, pleasure, excitement and a bit of fun too in these astonishing textile panels.”

Admission to the cathedral display is free but visitors are advised to check the cathedral's website for occasional closures and service times. Donations are being welcomed.

The ambitious project follows on from Jacqui's 'Threads Through Revelation' exhibition, which toured cathedrals from 2016 to 2018 and was seen by more than 500,000 visitors.
