A town in Lancashire has been named the friendliest place in the UK in a new survey.

In the report, compiled by rail operator LNER, data from the Office of National Statistics, along with hospitality rating, were analysed to reveal the friendliest destinations in the country to visit.

The operator has pulled the data together as the weather finally seems to be warming up, and families, couples or solo travellers will be making plans for days out or holidays around the UK, to show travellers where to go to be welcomed with open arms.

With a score of 79.9 out of a possible 100, Blackpool was rated the friendliest place by a good margin from second placed Brighton.

ONS figures on personal well-being of residents were combined with hospitality ratings from TripAdvisor and local population to reach a total score, with Blackpool coming out on top in a list of the country’s biggest 50 cities and towns.

Other big tourist spots beaten by Blackpool included third-placed York, Newcastle in fourth, and Edinburgh in fifth spot.

Blackpool had the highest number of five-start rated restaurants and hotels on TripAdvisor per head, with 143.3 venues per 100,000 people.

Residents also had high levels of satisfaction, happiness, purpose in life in ONS figures, which LNER says contributes to high levels of hospitality for visitors and locals alike.

Claire Ansley, customer experience director at LNER, added: “Apart from culture, attractions, and surroundings, one of the most important factors when choosing a destination to visit is the hospitality of its people.

“From striking up conversations in a local pub to receiving an act of kindness from strangers, visiting somewhere where locals are welcoming and affable can make a huge difference in your travel experience.

“Whether you’re looking for a solo city break or family vacation, our research reveals the friendliest destinations in the UK, where visitors will receive an especially warm welcome as they make memories and enjoy their travel experiences."

Other locations to make the top 10 were Bath, Chester, St Albans, Colchester, and Chelmsford.
