The council has released more details about a free, family-friendly event, that’s set to take place in Accrington this weekend.

To celebrate the launch of Market on the Square, Hyndburn Council has organised an opening event on Saturday, March 16.

It promises to be a day of “family-friendly activities and community fun” on Accrington Town Square and Broadway.

The event, which runs from 11am to 3pm, is designed to be an inclusive celebration that brings residents together to the heart of Accrington.

This celebration promises an array of activities suitable for all ages, including free children’s rides and face painting, live performances and exciting opportunities to win prizes.

The new Market on the Square will also be open and trading with a wide range of goods for shoppers to explore.

The event provides the opportunity for the entire community to come together and celebrate Accrington’s diverse culture, local talent, and local businesses.

Councillor Mohammed Younis, portfolio holder for levelling up at Hyndburn Council, said:  “I am thrilled to witness the unveiling of the new ‘Market on the Square’, and welcome all to come and join us at our opening event.

"This event marks not just the opening of a market but a celebration of the community and shared aspirations for the promising future of our town.“

Accrington Town Square’s transformational projects have been made possible through the Government’s Levelling Up Fund.

Last year plans for an £11 million redevelopment were announced and the town’s grade II listed Victorian Market Hall is set to benefit from this.

The plans involve moving stall holders to new locations throughout Accrington, until March 2025, when the renovation is set to be complete.

At the time, some stall holders questioned the transformational works and worried about the future of their business. Some stall holders even announced their closure as a result.

Market traders were later shown their new business units and the feedback from traders was said to be "really positive”.
