Officers say there will be an increased police presence at Burnley Cemetery, as they investigate reports of “suspicious behaviour”.

Police received a report today (March 7) of suspicious behaviour at the cemetery, which is reported to have taken place between Monday and Wednesday evening this week.

Officers have reassured the public that there is “no evidence of serious criminality” at this stage – but a full investigation is taking place.

More details will be revealed in due course.

Anyone with information has been asked to get in touch.

A police spokesperson said: “You may be aware of a police presence at Burnley Cemetery and we just wanted to let you know what we are doing there and provide some reassurance.

“We received a report earlier today of suspicious behaviour at the cemetery between Monday to Wednesday evening this week.

“At this stage there is no evidence of serious criminality having taken place, however we are carrying out a full investigation into the matter to establish exactly what has gone on. We will provide you with further information as soon as we can.

“Given the proximity of where our enquiries are taking place, we wanted to reassure the public that no form of hate crime has occurred.

“If anyone saw anything suspicious in the area across those evenings, we would ask that they call 101 and quote log 263 of March 7, 2024.”
