An 11-year-old boy is to be "spoken to" by police after throwing a rock at a train and damaging its window.

On Wednesday (March 6), British Transport Police (BTP) were alerted to an incident just north of Lancaster train station in which a member of the public had spotted a child launching a rock at a passing train.

The BTP were then informed that the train's window had been damaged, suffering a smashed outer skin.

Enquiries enabled the officers to identify an 11-year-old boy as the culprit and him and his parents will now be spoken with about the dangers of throwing objects at trains.

A spokesperson for the BTP said: "A member of the public reported seeing a child throw a rock at a passing train just north of Lancaster station.

"Shortly afterwards a Trans Pennine Express train reported a smashed outer window skin.

"Our fast track enquiries identified an 11-year old boy as being responsible

"Arrangements have been made to speak to him with his parents where we can explain the dangers of his actions.

"Safeguarding and youth offending team referrals will be submitted.

"We’ve also been invited by the school to give a rail safety talk to the children."
