Pictures have emerged of the adorable babies that were born on Thursday’s leap day (February 29).

A leap year only takes place every four years meaning the ‘leapling’ babies, who are born on the ‘extra day’ of the year, have rare birthdays.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which covers Chorley and South Ribble Hospital, and the Royal Preston Hospital, and the East Lancashire Hospital Trust (ELHT), which manages Royal Blackburn, Burnley General, Accrington Victoria and Pendle Community hospitals, have shared some images.

These images were shared with the permission from parents.

What is a leap year and what happens if you are born on this day?

Leap years take place when there is an extra day in a year that is added at the end of February, meaning there are 366 days instead of the normal 365 days in a year.

In the UK if you are born on a leap day, February 29, your birthday is typically seen as February 28 or March 1 on non-leap years.

The next leap year will take place in 2028.
