Store staff were on red alert after a prolific shoplifter was seen filling a trolley.

Blackburn magistrates heard the manager was warned about a possible "trolley push out" and security staff positioned at the door intercepted Christopher Chapman as he tried to leave.

Chapman, 41, of Pheasantford Green, Burnley, pleaded guilty to theft of goods worth £227 from Lidl, Burnley.

The duration of an existing suspended sentence order was extended to two years and he was made subject to a community order for 18 months with six months drug rehabilitation requirement and 20 days rehabilitation activity requirement.

Scott Parker, prosecuting, said having been stopped trying too leave with a full trolley, Chapman was taken to an office to wait for the police.

"He tried to leave and had to be held until officers arrived," said Mr Parker.

Gareth Price, defending, said at the time of the offence in November his client had problems with accommodation and alcohol.
