There is building work - and then there is major building work.
Regular readers of Looking Back could be forgiven for thinking that Blackburn town centre was one large engineering project in the mid 1960s and this photo will do nothing to dispel that idea.
Taken in July 1963 it shows the extensive work which was required to create a mew culvert for the River Blakewater under the town centre.
The work you can see was at Salford with Railway Road leading off to the left.
It clearly was something of an attraction with folk gathered around the railings watching the work take place.
In the background you can see a few of the shops from that time - James Pickup and Son; Baines and Allen and Townsons. Does anyone remember them?
