An in-depth study into the provision of swimming in Ribble Valley has been launched to look at the future of the council's half a century old Ribblesdale Pool in Clitheroe.

Residents are being given their say into what the coming years might hold for the popular venue and for borough swimming provision in general.

And if they respond by March 8, they have the chance to win a £100 Love2shop voucher.

Ribble Valley Council has commissioned the assessment of the future of the Edisford Road pool.

The study, undertaken by Strategic Leisure Limited, will consider the cost of rebuilding or refurbishing the pool, how much it will cost to run and whether or not the pool might attract funding.

It will also look at what type of facility is needed to meet the needs of future residents and swimmers at the current or alternative sites, and other physical activities that respondents take part in.

Ribblesdale Swimming Pool is housed in a 52-year-old building with design life of 30 years when constructed in 1972.

Councillor Ricky Newmark, chair of Ribble Valley Council’s community services committee, said: “Ribblesdale Pool is a popular facility, which has served generations of local swimmers, but it is suffering from wear and tear and is subject to spiralling energy costs.

“Despite numerous adaptations over the years, the pool is far from energy-efficient and this study will look at how we might take advantage of modern technology to reduce its running costs and help us meet our climate change objectives.

“We are committed to providing a public swimming pool and this study will also look at the leisure needs of Ribble Valley residents and options for securing external funding to help us provide a new or refurbished facility fit for the next fifty years.

“It is crucial that we understand the views of residents and pool-users, whose input we really value.”

The survey is available at and closes at midnight on Friday, March 8.

Respondents who provide their email address will be entered into a draw to win a £100 Love2shop voucher.
