Voters are being reminded of changes to postal and proxy voting ahead of this year's impending general election.

Ribble Valley Council is reminding residents who use the systems to cast their votes to ensure they are registered so they don't miss out on the chance to have their say.

Former residents of the borough who now live overseas can also cast their votes in future general elections too, with the next due to take place at some point in 2024.

Postal and proxy (permitting a trusted person to vote on their behalf) voters have to apply online to vote, providing a signature and their National Insurance number, and this has to be renewed every three years.

Proxy voters can now only vote for a maximum of two other people in the UK and two people living overseas or in the military on active service.

When it comes to overseas voters, the law which removed the right to vote of people who emigrated more than 15 years has since been abolished, meaning British citizens can now vote in the last constituency they were registered to vote in before they left the UK.

This includes people who left the UK before the age of 18.

To register - or re-register - to vote either by post, proxy, or from abroad, visit the Electoral Commission website.
