Emergency work on the M6 due to defects on the northbound carriageway has caused long delays.
Drivers heading home at the rush hour were facing delays between junction 28 Clayton-le-Woods and junction 29 at the M65.
North West Highways said crews were carrying out emergency repairs and there are 40 minute delays. Congestion is back to junction 27.
An update read: "All lanes are now open on the M6 in Lancashire northbound between junction 28 Clayton-le-woods and Junction 29 M65 junction.
"Delays remain but will start to ease."
