Fans of an East Lancashire football club are being urged to go to an upcoming home game on foot.

Let's Move Hyndburn's 'Walk to the Match' campaign is a collaboration with Accrington Stanley Football Club, its Community Trust, Supporter's Trust, and Women's Football Club aimed at inspiring people to be more active by walking to the club's home fixtures.

It began at last year's Accrington Stanley vs Derby County match, when the fans came together for the launch of 'Let's Walk to the Match' while raising social media awareness with images and quotes from the club's faithful.

From the success of the campaign’s first run, Accrington Stanley director David Burgess said “Let’s keep walking to the game in numbers.”

Now it is looking for local champions to get involved and to lead on walks from various meeting points across Hyndburn, beginning with the forthcoming home game on Saturday, February 24, against Crawley Town at the Wham Stadium.

More dates will be announced.

There will also be a ticket give away for this match shared across social media.

To get involved as a champion contact the supporters' trust chairman Peter Leatham.

He said: “I am delighted to promote the campaign and encourage our fans to join into walking to the stadium from the various points of the borough.

"It’s in everyone’s interest to take as much exercise as possible and help their fitness and social wellbeing.

"What better than with fellow Stanley fans to walk to the match."

Accrington Stanley Community Trust's Lee Wash said: "As part of our sustainability and health initiatives we are encouraging people to be more active, and walking is a great way to do this.

"We hope the campaign can make Accrington Stanley fans think about their match day routine and how walking to the match and elsewhere can really benefit their health”.

Accrington Stanley Women’s team chair, Sami Smithson, added: "There is monumental growth in women’s football and these matchdays will be opportunities for supporters to get together and walk to the match.”

Th women’s team have a home game on Sunday, February 11, against Darwen which will also be a walk to the match date.
