A woman has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after a pedestrian was hit by a car and left with serious injuries. 

Police closed Netherfield Road in Nelson between the junctions of Railway Street and Brunswick Street on Saturday night following a crash, in which it was reported a man in his 60s was hit by a car.

A spokesperson for the police said: "We were called around 9.30pm yesterday (Saturday, January 20) to a serious collision in Netherfield Road, Nelson.

"It was reported a Fiat Panda car had been involved in a collision with a pedestrian. 

"The pedestrian, a man in his 60s, suffered serious chest, leg and head injuries and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.

"The driver of the Fiat, a 44-year-old woman from Colne, was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and is in custody."

It is not known how long the road closure was in place for, but this morning (Sunday, January 21), the AA website showed that traffic was flowing freely in the area and there appeared to be no road closure in place.

A spokesperson for the police said on Saturday night: "Good evening all,

"Please be aware that Netherfield Road, Nelson, is currently closed due to a road traffic collision. This is between the junctions of Railway Street and Brunswick Street.

"Please avoid the area where possible."
