Several schools in Pendle are still closed today (January 19) due to the icy weather conditions.

While no more snow is currently in the forecast for Lancashire, roads and paths remain icy.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for ice in the area until 10am this morning, stating there will be "some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths. Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces".

The schools closed are:

  • Walverden Primary School, Nelson
  • Marsden Community Primary School, Pendle

  • Nelson Whitefield Infant School and Nursery Unit, Pendle

Mrs Mason said: "After a full site inspection, the decision has been made to close school today in the interests of safety.

"Although our site team have worked so hard to clear the snow and grit the grounds continuously during the week to remain open, with the snow fall on top the ice and the thin layer freezing, we are unable to clear this to make the grounds safe enough for today.

"The forecast is also varying on different app’s- some are predicting heavy snow during the day today. Thank you for you understanding."

  • Reedley Primary School, Pendle

Headteacher Mrs Bell said: "The pavements and side roads around school are currently treacherous.

"The playground, carpark and other paths are far too slippery for anyone to walk on. We have tried to grit, and scrape the ice away, but it just freezes over again. Temperatures are due to rise over the weekend so I am hopeful that the current issues will be resolved by then.

"Home learning is available on the school website and more work will be added. Children can also access programmes such as Times Table Rockstars and Maths Whizz.

"This is not a decision I have taken lightly and I am aware that it makes life very difficult for parents/carers, especially for those who are working.

"Health and safety must come first however and there is potential for accidents as the school site is not currently safe."
