This photo offers a fascinating glimpse into the development of Clitheroe town centre.
Dating to around 1905 it was taken looking up Wellgate towards the Market Place.
You can see construction of the clock tower for the town’s new Carnegie Library at the junction with Church Street underway. The library was officially opened in October 1905.
On the right was Smalley’s boot and shoe shop and at the top of Wellgate you can just make out the sign for Redman’s.
This photo was taken when horse and cart was the main form of transport. So much has changed in over a century and yet the scene is still recognisable today.
