A teenager who didn't want to be strip-searched on his 18th birthday ended up assaulting a police custody detention officer.

Blackburn magistrates heard Ajay Chadwick kicked custody officer Suzanne Hulley on the leg causing what she described as "immediate and intense" pain, on September 12 in Blackburn.

Chadwick, 18, of Briercliffe Road, Burnley, pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker.

He was made subject to a community order for 12 months, with a 25 day rehabilitation activity requirement.

He was also fined £80 and ordered to pay £100 compensation to the victim.

Deputy District Judge Anna Moran told Chadwick the detention officer had simply been doing her job.

"She didn't deserve to be assaulted by you," she said.

Usma Kauser, prosecuting, said Chadwick had been arrested on his 18th birthday and taken to the police station where officers requested a strip search.

"He was given instructions but was reluctant to remove clothing," said Miss Kauser.

"He resisted when officers went to handcuff him and when he was taken to the ground kicked out, catching the victim on the side of the leg."

Jonathan Taylor, mitigating, said a pre-sentence report suggested that Chadwick had not expressed remorse.

"He wishes to do that through me today," said Mr Taylor.

"There seems to be a need for some work on empathy and looking at the situation that led to the incident.

"The police officers took hold of him but that doesn't excuse his behaviour."
