A woman from Padiham says she plans to revamp her back garden, after winning thousands in a lottery draw.

Rosemary Brodie, aged 77, won £3,700 in a lottery draw organised by the Barry Kilby Prostate Cancer Appeal, a charity set up by former Burnley FC director Barry Kilby, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Rosemary has been playing the lottery since 2019 but has only ever won small amounts in the past. She was given the cheque on her birthday.

A spokesperson said: “Rosemary Brodie from Padiham, won £3,700.

"She has been playing the BKPCA Lottery since August 2019, previously winning small amounts, but this win came as a shock to her.

"Rosemary is going so spend some of the money on revamping her back yard.

“Also, it was Rosemary’s birthday on the day we presented her with the cheque."

The charity runs a regular lottery draw and the funds raised are used to test more men for prostate cancer.

There are four draws every month and an annual draw for £5,000. Participants can join for £1.25 per week or double your chances with two entries for £2.50 per week.

One in eight men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime and is the most common cancer in men, and causes 12,000 deaths a year - one every 45 minutes.

Mr Kilby was diagnosed with the cancer in 2012 and overcame the disease in 2016, the year he set up the appeal.

He is now encouraging more men to get a PSA test, which is said to detect prostate cancer, although the NHS suggest that PSA tests are “a controversial subject in the international medical community”.

There is currently no screening programme for prostate cancer on the NHS, in the UK.

The next local PSA testing day is our annual event a Burnley Football Club  on Saturday, March 23.
