There are delays and cancellations to train services in East Lancashire as heavy rain has flooded part of the railway.

Northern services at Burnley Manchester Road, Accrington, and Blackburn on the route between York and Blackpool North are affected this afternoon (January 2).

There is flooding on the line at Sowerby Bridge in West Yorkshire that is causing disruption, which is currently expected until around 4.30pm.

Northern say Network Rail were due on site at 2pm to begin work on the issue.

A Northern spokesperson said: "Due to heavy rain flooding the railway between Hebden Bridge and Sowerby Bridge, all lines are blocked.

"Train services between Blackpool North and York may be cancelled or delayed.

"Train services are unable to run between Halifax and Hebden Bridge (in this direction only)."

Northern ticket holders are able to use their tickets on Transpennine Express services between Leeds and Manchester in both directions.

The 14:21 service from Blackburn to Blackpool North has been cancelled as a result of the flooding and was terminated back at Halifax.

The 15:21 is currently being held at Leeds with no indication yet of whether it will continue.

The 16:04 service from Blackpool to York has also been cancelled though is currently scheduled to start from Leeds at 17:30.
