The community came together this weekend to take part in the 50th anniversary year of the annual Edgworth Three Legged Race.

Fundraising for Cancer Research UK, more than 90 residents from the area dressed up in their best fancy dress costumes on Saturday, December 30, to take part in the race, stopping at pubs across the area for an alcoholic or soft drink.

The total amount raised hasn’t yet been confirmed but the Just Giving Page is already up to £5,430.

The fun started at 12pm at The Barlow Institute before competitors moved onto the Cricket Club, White Horse, Black Bull, over the Wayoh Dam, onto the Chetham Arms, back over the Wayoh Dam, back to the Black Bull, White Horse, Cricket Club and then The Barlow.

Ellie Ramwell, 27, and Hannah Duckworth, 30, brought back the Edgworth Three Legged Race after it was cancelled a few years ago.

In 2019, the friends decided to start the competition up again so they could take part in something they saw happening when they were children.

Ellie said: “The event has been on and off for the last 50 years, it hasn’t been on consecutively every year, but this year was 50 years if it was every year.

“And it is all in aid of Cancer Research UK. It was founded by Gordon Childs in 1973 and has always involved fancy dress.

“This year it was a gold theme, so we encouraged all the competitors to incorporate a little bit of gold into their costumes to represent the 50, the golden year.

“Last year we raised just under £3,000 and this year we are hoping to be over that.

“All the local businesses as well as the competitors help in so many ways, we had a big raffle with more than 25 raffle prizes donated, and it is just a real community event. Everyone pulls together, and it is just a really fun day.

“On the day we had 46 teams take part, so just over 90 people competed on the day, and we had 12 stewards and all the staff from the venues showed their support too wearing t-shirts.

“We saw the event happening when we were younger and couldn’t take part because you have to be 18, so sort of re-started it again because my generation saw it all happening but were never able to take part because it got cancelled.

“And it has been a success ever since.

“Every penny towards the event is amazing because at the end of the day if we can contribute to Cancer Research UK in anyway, that’s the aim of the day.

“It is quite overwhelming, and it was emotional at the end of the day yesterday to see everyone having a good time, I’m really grateful that the village supports it and everyone comes out.”
