A man who launched a tirade of vile abuse at police officers when they stopped a car in which he was a passenger has been jailed.

Blackburn Magistrates' Court heard Omar Sharif told an officer what he would do to his wife his sister and his daughter.

He also made homophobic comments about the officer’s sexuality during the stop on June 14.

Sharif, 43, of Walton Lane, Nelson, pleaded guilty to threatening behaviour.

He also pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol, while disqualified and without insurance on a separate occasion.

He was jailed for 20 weeks and banned from driving for 40 months.

Graeme Tindall, prosecuting, said the car Sharif was a passenger in was stopped because police suspected some of those on board had been involved in a burglary.

“Everyone else was co-operating with the police except the defendant,” said Mr Tindall.

“He encouraged the driver not to co-operate and then he became abusive towards the officers.”

Mr Tindall said at the time of the driving offences Sharif was 11 months into a five-year ban.

Mark Williams, in mitigation, said Sharif had accepted using the language straight away.

“There is nothing I can say which makes the words any better, it was very unpleasant,” said Mr Williams.

On the day of the driving offences Sharif had gone to Essex to buy a car and the female who was with him was to drive it back.

“She drove most of the way back but then said she was tired and he foolishly took over,” said Mr Williams.
