A former East Lancashire local authority leader suspended by Labour over allegedly anti-Semitic remarks has been re-instated by the party.

In June 2022 Cllr Mohammed Iqbal, the former leader Pendle Council leader and then Labour group leader, was excluded temporarily by the party while an investigation took place.

It has been alleged that he made anti-Semitic comment during a Full Council debate on Israel-Palestinian tensions, following the violent funeral of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Aqla.

Cllr Iqbal's references to Hitler and Nazi Germany’s persecution of Jewish people, and his alleged comparison of that era with more recent events in Ukraine, Palestine and elsewhere in the world led to his suspension and investigation by the Labour Party.

He strongly denies holding any anti-Semitic views.

Now the Labour Party has lifted his suspension and re-instated him - a move welcomed by current Pendle Council leader and Labour group boss Cllr Asjad Mahmood.

He intends to stand again in his Bradley ward in Nelson in the local elections in May,

Cllr Iqbal, who also represents Brierfield and Nelson West on Lancashire County Council, said in a statement after the decision: "Following my suspension in June 2022 from the Labour Party for allegations I was anti-Semitic in a motion to the Annual Council meeting in support of the Palestinian people, I’m grateful to the 100 per cent support especially from my family and friends over this difficult period which has concluded with my suspension finally been removed and I can continue to serve the residents who put their trust in me 25 years ago as a Labour Councillor.

"I have been a strong voice for speaking up on behalf of local people and helping resolve problems across Pendle and will continue to do so.

"I have a proven track record of speaking out against injustices across the globe and attempts were made to silence me which thanks to everyone were not successful.

"To this end I am, God willing, intending to stand as a candidate in Bradley ward in the election to be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024.

"I know my political opponents have been spreading rumours contrary to my decision and I want to assure them and those who have put their faith in me for so long.

"I still have the conviction and passion to stand up for what I believe in and will speak out on issues affecting hardworking people."

Cllr Mahmood said: "As leader of the Labour group I welcome the reinstatement of Cllr Iqbal who has dedicated years to serving people.

"He is an asset to the people of Pendle."

Pendle Council's Liberal Democrat group leader Cllr David Whipp said: "Cllr Iqbal's remarks weren't anti-Semitic. His suspension by the Labour party wasn't justified. It's right that his suspension has been lifted."
