The elusive Grinch and his dog have been spotted in Darwen for the first time this year – have you seen him on your travels?

The Grinch, whose real identity is a mystery, takes to the streets of Darwen every Christmas and so far he has been spotted at Darwen Tower and in Sunnyhurst Wood.

He is set to attend several events this year, including a school fayre and a skate park’s Christmas light switch on.

She said: “He walks around Darwen and I post photos of where he goes.

“The first time he went out was on Monday, November 27. He went up to Darwen Tower with his dog.

“The reaction he receives is overwhelming. Kids will wave and take photographs with him.”

Debra said he does this each year to spread festive cheer.

She said: “He does this from his heart and not for any other reason. He just wants to spread some Christmas cheer.

“When he is spotted people often post a picture online, excited about who they have just seen. Once you see him you know you are in the run up to Christmas

“It lifts everyone’s spirits.”

The Grinch, a fictional character created by children's author Dr. Seuss who hated Christmas so much he stole it, only to have his views changed upon seeing the Christmas spirit in Whoville, has become a local celebrity in Darwen and pictures emerge of him each year.

Last year, there was even a campaign for him to turn on the Darwen Christmas lights.

He is set to make an appearance at several festive events in Darwen this month, including:

  • Christmas light switch on at Junction 4 Skatepark, on Friday December 1, 5pm-8pm
  • Darwen Aldridge Community Academy Christmas Fayre, Tuesday, December 5, 5pm-8pm
  • Bespoke Gifts and Home décor, on Bolton Road, on December 9 from 12pm – 2pm
