Tributes have been paid by the club to Blackburn Rovers superfan Alan ‘Birdy’ Birkbeck, who has died aged 74.

A life-long supporter and avid memorabilia collector, Birdy dedicated his whole life to the club – barely missing a match, home or away, since attending his first game at Ewood Park in April 1953, aged just three.

Birdy has been described by the club as one of Rovers’ most recognisable supporters and a familiar face on the club’s Fans Forum, who also ran an independent supporters club, ‘Ewood Blues’.

He won the Unsung Hero award at the Northwest Football Awards in 2014 for his long-serving loyalty to the club.

A tribute issued by Blackburn Rovers FC said: “He was more than just a supporter … he was a much-loved member of the Blackburn Rovers family and matchdays won’t be the same without him in the crowd.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his wife Annette and all of Alan’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.”

Hundreds of supporters expressed their sadness over the news on social media.

Jonathan Lobb said: “What a sad day for the Rovers community. A real character. He will be sorely missed. RIP Birdy.”

Siobhan said: “I'm so very sad to hear this. I will always cherish the memories of sitting in his row all those years.

"What a true fan, true Rover and true gentleman. How sad he never got to see his beloved Blues make it back to the top flight.”

Mark wrote: “Absolute legend. Known the man many years. My kids and grandkids knew him too. There will never be another like him. Huge loss.”

Janet added: “An absolute Ewood Park legend, and I have so many happy memories of away days and Europe with this absolute gent.

"God bless you, Birdy, and I hope you get the Rovers send-off that you so deserve.”
