A man who racked up a series of theft-related offences to feed his drug addiction was given a chance to change his ways.

Blackburn magistrates heard that in the past Kai Rayson had failed to take advantage of the help offered to him and move on with his life.

Rayson, 21, of Sumner Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to seven offences of shoplifting, theft of two pedal cycles from outside a leisure centre and burglary at Vision Express, Accrington, and theft of designer glasses.

He was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison suspended for 18 months with 10 days rehabilitation activity requirement. He was ordered to pay £200 compensation to each of the bike owners.

Henry Prescott, prosecuting, said the bikes had been chained up outside Blackburn leisure centre and Rayson and another man were captured on CCTV.

Rayson and another man were also caught climbing over the barrier at Vision Express before breaking into a cabinet and removing glasses worth over £1,000.

Gareth Price, defending, said his client still had the chance to make something of his life but needed to make the decision on which way he wanted to go.

"In the past he hasn't taken advantage of the that was offered by the Probation Service," said Mr Price. "He feels he can now co-operate with the support that may be offered although he is realistic that the totality of the offending before the court may cross the custodial threshold."
