Around 30 people were evacuated from Pendle Leisure Centre which was forced to close due to a gas leak in the building.

The centre on Crown Way in Colne was temporarily closed at around 9am today (November 1) in line with guidance from the gas company, Cadent.

Cadent engineers arrived at the scene and repairs were carried out 'almost immediately'.

The gym, Feelgood Suite, trampolining, and fitness classes opened a couple of hours after the temporary closure however the pool remains closed until tomorrow (November 2).

Swimming lessons for the day have been cancelled and members will be notified of this directly and refunded if necessary.

A spokesperson for Pendle Leisure Centre said: "A minor gas leak occurred today at Pendle Leisure Centre. Around 9am after a smell of gas was detected and as per our safety protocol, we evacuated the full building immediately, which was an estimated 30 people including staff.

"The gas company, Cadent were quickly on the scene and the leak was isolated and made safe.

"The repairs were done almost immediately, and we were able to open up 50 per cent of the facility with little disruption, the other half of the building, the wet side that is reliant on the gas boilers to heat the pool is currently closed due to the gas supply being turned off but will be back to normal tomorrow .

"Anyone affected by the cancelled swimming lessons have been contacted directly and the lessons will be rescheduled accordingly."

In the meantime, members can use the other three centres included in the PLC membership including West Craven Sports Centre, Pendle Wavelengths, and Seedhill Athletics and Fitness Centre in Nelson.

An update posted on PLC Facebook page two hours after the customer notice statement said: “The following facilities are now back open – gym, Feelgood Suite, XR2, trampolining, fitness classes.

“The pool and shower facilities are still currently closed until further notice.

“Swimming lessons have been cancelled for today. You will be notified of this directly by email shortly.

“Thank you again for your patience while we resolve this.”
