A veteran golfer at an East Lancashire golf club has played his last 18 holes of golf, days after his 88th birthday.

On Sunday, October 8, Larry Glover played his final round and was celebrated at Baxenden Golf Club and its membership at the course in Wooley Lane, Accrington.

The club held a competition in honour of his last game, after 60 years on the links.

Larry has been a member of the golf club since 1965, when it cost just 10 guineas to join, and decided to end his season and career with one final round.Lancashire Telegraph:

Alex Harper, from Baxenden Golf Club, said: "Larry has been a good golfer through his years, but alas age is slowing him down.

"He is a wonderful gentleman and he has the love and respect of all of our members, staff and committee.

"We want to help honour him, he may be the longest serving member of any golf club across our region."

Larry was presented with a trophy at the end of the competition, and enjoyed live music and supper with all his friends and fellow members.

He has had two hole in ones throughout his playing career, which means he also had to put two bottles of whiskey behind the bar, but it took him a long time to achieve the feats at ages 79 and 82 years old.

Lancashire Telegraph:

Larry said: "The club decided to organise the event for me after I said I was packing it in and playing my last game, and I looked forward to it.

"I started playing golf in 1963 when I was 28 at the Old Links Golf Club in Chorley Old Road, Bolton, with a lot of the Bury Football Club players.

"I got into golf after trying cricket in the North Manchester league and one of the players invited me up to play. I went and liked it, and have been there ever since.

"I have been at the club for 60 years and I will definitely miss it, but as you get older you have to accept these things!"
