A woman who crashed her car at 10.20am became aggressive and abusive towards police officers who tried to breathalyse her.

Blackburn magistrates heard Danielle Sewell eventually had to be taken to the floor and handcuffed, but still refused to provide a specimen for analysis.

Sewell, 43, of Windsor Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen.

She was made subject to a community order for 12 months with nine months drug rehabilitation requirement, six months primary care mental health treatment and 20 days rehabilitation activity requirement.

She was banned from driving for 30 months and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £114 victim surcharge.

Susheela Regala, prosecuting, said the collision happened at 10.20am on Sunday, June 18, in Guide and the defendant’s vehicle ended up in the middle of the road facing the wrong way.

“She was abusive and verbally aggressive, and the police describe her as slurring her words and smelling of intoxicants,” said Miss Regala.

“When they tried to arrest her she became violent and had to be taken to the floor where she tried to kick out.”

Daniel King, in mitigation, said his client was in a state of turmoil at the time.

“That turmoil was domestic, emotional and mental,” said Mr King.

“This incident has brought into sharp focus the issues that she has and she is keen to receive all the help available.

“This is possibly a new chapter in her life where she can start to address her problems.”
