The Village Green Tea Room, Rivington is Lancashire's best cafe

The Village Green Tea Room, on Sheephouse Lane in Rivington,has won the best café in Lancashire at the England Business Awards at the Mercure Hotel in Manchester, and is now set for the finals in six weeks to see if it can pick up the accolade for the best café in the country.

Mum and daughter, Jayne and Jade Tolen run the tearoom, with Grandmother Elsie Kent working alongside them.

The tearoom was originally opened by the 85-year-old Mrs Kent in 1982 but was taken over by her daughter Jane some 10 years later.

Jayne said: “It feels fantastic to have won and everybody is really pleased.

“The tearoom started in the early 80s when my mum owned it.

“It’s amazing, it means we will be busier, and it is good to know that we have got it as it is an achievement.”

Customers have helped the tearoom win the award as they scan a code to give the ladies a good review.

Jayne said: “One of the café’s nominated even came over to thank us which I thought was nice.

“We have modernised it quite a lot as it was very basic before, so we renovated it and made an outside seating area.”

Along with the interior changing, Jayne and Jade have become known for their menu, serving homemade quiche, sausage rolls, a selection of fresh sandwiches and hot meals.

The tearoom is at the heart of  the community social life - especially for senior citizens.

 Jayne said: “There are a lot of people who come in, who have lost their partners.

“They get together and have a chat or play crosswords.

“There is a 92-year-old walker that comes here regularly, and he even has his birthday dinner here.”

Mrs Kent still works at the tearoom, helping with the dishes and stock as well as chatting to the customers.

Jayne said: “She loves it and still works here.

“She thought it was great that we won last night and was really pleased for us.”
