The director of a discount store has been banned from being in charge of any company for seven years after failing to submit the correct VAT returns.

A notice from the Insolvency Service states Irfan Banglawala, whose last known address was in  Belle Vue Street, Blackburn, failed to ensure that his firm, C.R. Discount Stores Ltd (County Road Discount Store, Liverpool), submitted accurate VAT returns.

The inaccurate returns dated as far back as January 7, 2017, and resulted in undeclared tax to HM Revenue and Custom totalling £117,920.02.

C.R. Discount Store Ltd failed to submit the correct tax returns during the period of November 2016 to May 2019 by under declaring sales from the store.

HMRC raised assessments totalling £109,701 for that period and then raised interest totalling £8,219.02 for the same time frame.

C.R. Discount Stores Ltd went into liquidation in May 2022 and at the time of the liquidation, HMRC also claimed £259,540.45 from the firm, of which £124,925.41 was owed in respect of outstanding VAT, VAT surcharges and VAT interest.

As a result of these underpayments, Banglawala, 42, has been disqualified from being a director of any company for seven years starting from September 7, 2023.

A statement of affairs on the Companies House website appears to show Banglawala also owes an energy company £5,000, Liverpool City Council more than £5,000, an accountancy firm in Blackburn £1,000, and £45,000 to Barclays.

His estimated assets are believed to be £9,400.
