Residents living in Bastwell have spoken out over speeding drivers after a number of accidents in and around the area.

It follows two separate crashes over the weekend, one which happened on a stretch of road renowned for spedding drivers.

Two vehicles were involved in the crash on Poplar Street, near the Orchard Social Club, at around 10pm on Saturday, September 9.

Earlier on the same day, several police cars, ambulances and fire engines were called to Oak Street after a crash where a car had turned on its side.

It prompted a local resident to speak out over what he compares to drivers from the ‘Fast and Furious’ film franchise.

One resident, who wanted to be known by his first name, Adam, said: “People are driving way too fast and I can foresee another accident around here in the coming days.

“It is like something out of the Fast and Furious movies but they can’t drive so good.

“What the hell is going on? We live here and we have seen people speeding up and down this road or driving without due care.

“On Saturday the driver had to be rescued as people were going to cause some damage to him - they were so angry.

“An accident takes place on Whalley New Road all the time. This road is a race track and we have lost members of our community on this road yet nobody learns.

“A speed camera is needed before someone gets hurt.”

Councillor Shaukat Hussain said he was concerned with the number incidents taking place on the stretch.

He said: “I have raised this and people need to realise that this is a built up area.

“It’s a mixture of speeding, reckless driving and poor parking.

“We’ve been very lucky no one has been hurt seriously as of yet.

“I have emailed and asked for highways officers to come on site and explore what interventions could be placed to reduce speed and awareness around this area.”
