A furniture maker described as a “model worker” who had plans to travel to America with his partner took his life, an inquest concluded.

Joshua James Riley, 30, suffered multiple brain injuries after falling from a motorway bridge on July 10 a hearing at Preston Coroner’s Court heard.

Joshua, of Burnley, went into cardiac arrest after the fall.

He was taken to Royal Preston Hospital where Dr Catherine Roberts confirmed he sustained brain injuries and multiple fractures.

Mr Riley died in hospital two days later.

In a statement, Joshua’s partner Olivia Stockwell said: “We had known each other six years, and were excited for life together as a couple.

“We had plans to go to the United States of America.”

Simon Yates, Joshua’s boss, said in a statement: “Joshua was a model employee.

“We had spoken on the Monday morning and there was no sign of what he was going to do. I am extremely shocked by what has happened.”

Nicola Hartley had been driving along the road when Joshua fell, and proceeded to help a lorry driver also at the scene to call the emergency services.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Saunders said police received concern for welfare reports of a man on the bridge at the time.

Paramedics who attended found Joshua’s driving licence and a note on his person, and he was taken away in an ambulance shortly after.

Graham Riley, Joshua’s father, said in a statement: “Joshua talked about plans for the future and nothing indicated that he was in a low mood when I saw him the night before.”

Concluding the inquest, coroner Christopher Long said: “On the face of the evidence from statements, it seems Joshua’s actions could not have been foreseeable.

“However, as the note was found at the scene, the decision to end his life became clear as time went on and I am satisfied Joshua James Riley intended to take his life when he approached the scene.

“To Joshua’s family, I am sorry for your loss and I pass on all my condolences.”

Mr Long gave a medical cause of death as multiple traumatic brain injuries, and concluded Mr Riley died of suicide.

A group of Josh's friends are taking on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge on Saturday, September 16, in a bid to raise money for mental health charity ANDYSMANCLUB.

Clarification: A previous version of this article stated Mr Riley had collided with a vehicle after falling from the bridge. We would like to correct the record to state Mr Riley did not collide with any vehicles when he fell from the bridge, and would like to apologise for any upset or distress this has caused.
