A prolific offender was back in court within a week of his release from his latest prison sentence.

Blackburn magistrates heard Christopher Costello racked up 10 offences in one day to add to the 424 offences that were already on his record.

Costello, 59, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to six breaches of a Criminal Behaviour Order, three charges of shoplifting and one of criminal damage.

He was jailed for 18 weeks and ordered to pay £154 victim surcharge on release.

District Judge Alexandra Preston said she had met Costello several times since she started sitting in Blackburn and was getting used to dealing with him.

"You have pleaded guilty to the usual array of charges plus a criminal damage this time," said District Judge Preston.

She said Costello had apologised when sober but it was her view the shops and their staff had to be protected.

"The staff ae just doing their jobs and shouldn't be abused by you," said District Judge Preston.

"You continually breach court orders and you don't co-operate with the probation service."

Gee Leung, prosecuting, said Costello had gone into the Co-op Late Shop on Market Street, Colne, and taken cans of beer on several occasions.

When he was challenged by staff he said he wasn't going to pay and told them to call the police.

When he was denied entry he became abusive and threatened to smash up the shop.

At one stage he head butted the glass door causing damage.

David Lawson, mitigating, said his client was released from prison on August 25.

"He came out with a renewed sense of optimism but within a few days alcohol took its grip," said Mr Lawson.

"When that happens his optimism dwindles and he ends up back in court.

"In the cold light of day he is ashamed of his behaviour towards the shopkeepers and members of the public and he asks me to apologise on his behalf."
