A Blackburn resident was treated to a surprise pamper day by her local salon for her 90th birthday.

Mavis Bullen turned 90 on Tuesday, August 1 and Catherine Fallows, her beautician who she has been going to for more than 25 years, planned her a surprise birthday treat.

On Wednesday (August 2), Mavis came into Odyssey Hair and Beauty on Pleckgate Road, Blackburn for her regular hair and nails appointment. She was greeted with balloons and bucks fizz as well as presents from salon owners and other regular customers.

Mavis has two daughters, Judith and Gillian. She has lived in Blackburn her whole life, where she worked as an accountant for Booth & Openshaw until she was 75.

Catherine said: “Mavis has done so much for the community and she’s such an inspiration. She’s always asking how she can support me and loves to spoil everyone so it was lovely to surprise her.

“We had flowers delivered in and prepared sandwiches and a birthday cake and some of the other customers got Mavis some chocolate.

“When she came in she was so shocked and kept saying she ‘didn’t deserve this’ but she absolutely does. She’s a huge inspiration to us all here and she’s the most beautiful, loving, kind woman.”

Mavis regularly attends church and continues doing work to support the community. She is also a huge lover of sports cars.

Despite her age, Mavis loves to look and feel young and keeps on top of her beauty treatments with a hair appointment every week and a nail appointment every three.

Catherine added: “She’s absolutely adorable and always looks perfect with a matching handbag and matching shoes. Even though she doesn’t have to, it’s nice that she still cares to look smart and pamper herself.

“She’s more than a customer and we’ve got a beautiful relationship. I just want to thank Mavis for always being so beautiful and lovely all the time.”
