One lane on the A56 northbound is closed after a crash, which caused a diesel and paint spillage.

The stretch of road, approaching Haslingden, is closed and motorists have been warned of heavy delays.

Currently, there are five miles of congestion which almost stretches back to Bury. Motorists have been warned of 45 minute delays.

The fire service is in attendance.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: “[Delays on] A56 northbound between the M66, A680, A676 and A682, approaching Haslingden.

“One lane, of two, is closed due to a collision and spill.

“Fire and Rescue are working at scene with traffic officers. There are five miles of congestion, almost back to Bury.

“There are 45 minute delays on the approach.”

A spokesperson for AA Traffic and Travel said: “Very slow traffic and one lane closed due to crash on A56 Northbound at M66 (Ramsbottom Junction). Congestion to The M66 J2 (Bury). Travel time is around 40 minutes.”
