Volunteers from a community group spent the evening helping to maintain graves that had collapsed due to the harsh weather.

The Brookhouse Development Group put a call out for assistance on Monday (July 24) for people to assist them at Pleasington Cemetery.

The heavy rainfall led to flooding in parts of the county and the huge amount of water led to some of the graves collapsing.

A group spokesperson said: “Several graves at Pleasington Cemetery, Blackburn have collapsed due to the recent harsh weather. We need volunteers to support our team to restore dignity to the graves.”

Sabir Esa who visits the cemetery regularly shared pictures of some of the graves that had collapsed due to the bad weather.

He said: “We've experienced some heavy rainfall in our borough recently, and it has taken a toll on our local cemetery, Pleasington Cemetery.

“It breaks my heart to share that due to the intense rain, some graves have collapsed, and it has left families and friends devastated and worried about their loved one's final resting places.

“Pleasington Cemetery holds a special place in the hearts of many residents. It's not just a burial ground; it's a place of solace, a place to remember and honour those we've lost. Seeing it in disarray has left many of us feeling deeply saddened and concerned.”
