A driver who pulled onto a main road without giving way caused another vehicle to crash head first into a takeaway on the other side of the road.

Blackburn Magistrates' Court was told how Kornel Norbert Szczepanik-Jachna then reversed his car back up the street, colliding with several parked vehicles before driving down back alleys to his nearby home.

Polish national Szczepanik-Jachna, 32, of Gillibrand Street, Darwen, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis, and driving without insurance or a licence.

He was jailed for 12 weeks by magistrates at the hearing on Thursday, July 13.

Jackie Partington, prosecuting, said the defendant drove his Volvo V70 down Cavendish Street towards Blackburn Road in Darwen at 12.55am on April 24.

At the junction he failed to give way and collided with another car which in turn collided with the front window of a nearby takeaway.

He then fled the scene, crashing into a number of parked vehicles on the two minute drive back to his house in Gillibrand Street.

Police found his car parked outside his home and when police entered he initially pretended to be asleep.

Officers noted he appeared to be under the influence of drink or drugs but refused to provide samples for analysis.

Szczepanik-Jachna said he had been going to the petrol station to inflate his tyres.
