The new Blakey Moor Terrace, which is being converted into a new restaurant and leisure space, is taking shape in Blackburn.

Work has been taking place to rebuild the terraced structure throughout the winter and spring with the roof now having been completed.

It came just ahead of two weeks of torrential rain in the town.

Workmen are now completing the final to the brickwork and the exterior of the structure.

Late last year the demolition stage of the work opposite King George's Hall was completed and revealed a cellar which was once the location of store and video shop.

The area will be restored as new restaurant spaces as part of a wider £3 million Townscape Heritage Project with Blackburn with Darwen Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

A new steel frame supports the existing structure of the old part of the building and the new section and the cellars will not be retained as part of the new building.

New plans for the terrace include a curved frontage where the former Subway unit was located.

The cost of the new design - which will feature a single licensed restaurant rather than the originally proposed two - is less than rebuilding the end of the terrace to the original design.

Instead of splitting the building into two, the changes will allow for it to be one large unit. The main work is due to be completed by the end of 2023.

The new artist impressions of what it could look like were revealed last year.

The council is working with architects, Group Ginger to develop the new plans which ‘preserve the historical quality of the row of terraces'.

Meanwhile close by Rummage Rescuers Unity book shop has now relocated to the corner of Northgate on the site of the former bookmakers.

The book shop is open from 9am to 5pm throughout the week.
