A community fun day helped raise thousands for a new dedicated funeral centre at a mosque.

The Masjid al-Momineen based in Ash Street, Blackburn, hosted the event on Sunday on the mosque grounds.

Despite the cloudy start to the day hundreds of people from across Bastwell and Little Harwood turned out.

The event featured barbecues, fun rides, a bouncy castle and an appearance by ‘Mr Tee’ the famous ice cream and dessert brand.

A team of volunteers were on hand to help with the staging of the event and also to marshal crowds and parking.

Mum Fazila, who attended with her children, said: "It has been a fantastic day and it was very well organised.

"A huge thank you to the mosque and the volunteers who put in so much effort to put this on.

"There was loads to do for the family and some really great food stalls which we have not seen in Blackburn before."

More than £100,000 has been raised towards a £400,000 target to build the new funeral centre.

The centre will allow families to conduct funeral rites at the mosque itself.

The mosque said over the course of the Covid pandemic, the community faced great obstacles in ‘serving the local community through funeral services as their funeral facilities do not meet the current standards’.

The purpose built funeral building will include a dedicated Ghusl khaana (ablution area) and shrouding area and designated rooms for men and women.
