Five people have been fined by a council for dumping waste on the borough's streets.

In separate cases at Burnley Magistrates' Court, the five offenders,  all from Nelson, were ordered to pay a total of £5,373 between them.

Each of them was issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice and ordered to pay £150 but all failed to pay, which resulted in the cases being referred to Burnley Magistrates' Court.

All of the five Nelson residents also failed to appear in court for their hearings.

Leader of Pendle Council, Councillor Asjad Mahmood, said: “The Council tries its best to keep the borough clean and tidy and we expect residents to do the same with their neighbourhoods, respecting their fellow neighbours and the areas in which they live.”

Ioan Botez, of Berriedale Road, Nelson, was fined a total of £1,460.50 for persistently dumping bags of waste on a back street.

He was found guilty of dumping waste in the Berriedale Road area of Nelson and fined £660, as well as being ordered to pay court costs of £512.50, £24 compensation and a £264 victim surcharge, bringing the total to £1,460.50.

Claudia Marin, of Belgrave Street, Nelson, was fined a total of £1,532.50 for also persistently dumping bags of waste on a back street.

She was found guilty of dumping waste in the Belgrave Street area of Nelson and fined £660. She was also ordered to pay court costs of £512.50, £96 compensation and a £264 victim surcharge, amounting to a total of £1,532.50.

China McCoy, of West Street, Nelson, was fined a total of £1,564.00 for also persistently dumping bags of waste on a back street.

She was found guilty of dumping waste in the West Street area of Nelson, fined £660 and ordered to pay court costs of £512.50, as well as a victim surcharge of £264.

Priscilla Corcoran, of Whitehall Street, Nelson, was fined a total of £408 for persistently dumping bags of waste on a back street.

She was found guilty of dumping waste in the Whitehall Street area of Nelson, fined £220 and ordered to pay court costs of £100, plus a £88 victim surcharge, bringing the total to £408.

Zubair Shah, of Whitehough Place, Nelson, was fined a total of £408 for dumping bags of waste on a front street.

He was found guilty of dumping waste in the Whitehough Place area of Nelson, fined £220, ordered to pay court costs of £100 and a £88 victim surcharge, bringing the total to £408.

Councillor Zafar Ali, executive member for environment and climate change, said: "I'm pleased yet more cases have led to successful prosecutions.

"It demonstrates just how seriously both Pendle Borough Council and the courts look upon these crimes.”

David Walker, Pendle Council's assistant director of operational services, added: “These successful prosecutions give us the opportunity to show the wider community that we take environmental crime very seriously and our officers are working very hard to bring offenders to task.

“By failing to admit the initial offence and pay the initial fixed penalty notice, all the offenders have ended up with much larger fines and their cases being made public."
