A Blackburn businessman has been awarded a British Citizen Award (BCA) at the Palace of Westminster.

Ram Gupta was one of 26 individuals at the ceremony and was recognised of his community and business efforts.

The British Citizen Award in partnership with One Stop, is now in its ninth year and recognises people who positively impact their communities throughout the country.

Ram was at the Palace of Westminster on Thursday and receive the BCA Medal of Honour and invited to use the post-nominals BCAe as a legacy of his achievements.

The presentation was hosted by TV presenter Matt Allwright, and attended by BCA Patrons, Dame Mary Perkins, Founder of Specsavers, and The Rt Hon Lord Dholakia.

Ram has donated thousands of laptops, tablets and other IT equipment to the disadvantaged in the community, so that children and families have access to IT and education.

Ram said: "The gift of giving is for the giver and yesterday was truly a gift when we as a family were invited to receive our medal and certificate, presented by Lord Dholakia.

"When my father came to the UK in the 60’s, he adopted the British values through his experiences and brought us up to help others.

"It is through these values our parents live on and we share a responsibility to leave the earth in a batter place than what we found it.

"Being Blackburn born and bred, we have seen the challenges we face as a town.  To be recognised for our small contribution towards the education of the amazing people of Blackburn with Darwen means the earth.

"Its not the award that matters.  It’s the inspiration it gives to others to help others and be better. Thank you to BCA for this recognition and we promise to upload the values the award respresents."
