THE stable block at the back of a heritage listed hall could be turned into a workshop.

Community Solutions North West Ltd want to convert the rear annexe of Elmfield Hall in Gatty Park, Hyndburn Road, Church.

It has applied to Hyndburn Council for Listed Building Consent for internal and external alterations and remediation works to the existing stable building

A supporting statement submitted to planners says: "The existing Building is Grade II listed and was originally constructed circa 1850.

"It was a home for the Gatty family who were local chemical manufacturers.

"The existing building has had several uses including community centre and flats.

"There is evidence of many alterations to the building over the years.

"Internally many of the original features remain, although there has been damage and renewal.

"The stable, to which this application relates, is attached to a large rear extension of little merit which is effectively annexed from the original building.

"The listing focuses on the frontage of the building.

"There is no proposed change in the appearance of the building.

"Any alterations or remediations will be done like for like. For example, the proposed new windows will be in the same style and character of the existing windows but up to current standards.

"The scheme is to refurbish the existing stables attached to the rear annexe building which extends to the rear of the main hall, together with providing external remediation works to restore the building fabric.

"The intention is to provide a suitable space for a functionable workshop area.

"The overall principle is to retain the existing building in its current form, with minimal alteration.

"The alterations themselves are primarily centred on repairing damaged elements where possible and replacing unrepairable items such as doors and windows.

"The original cast iron stable divider is to be relocated and retained.

"Overall, the scheme will preserve and maintain all the important architectural elements to the building, whilst providing a new use which will ensure continued maintenance for years to come.

"These proposals seek to improve the context of the building bringing it back into use.

"It is considered that the proposals will not have any impact on the significance of the building and surrounding heritage assets."
