People have been urged to avoid an area of Haslingden as six fire engines tackle a blaze.

The fire service was called to Commerce Street at around 9.05am this morning (June 23).

Six fire engines from Hyndburn, Fulwood, Rawtenstall, Bacup, Burnley and an engine from Greater Manchester along with the aerial ladder platform from Hyndburn, are in attendance.

Pictures and videos have surfaced of the blaze at Carrs Industrial Estate. People can reportedly see the black smoke from as far as Accrington.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “At 9.05am on June 23, six fire engines from Hyndburn, Fulwood, Rawtenstall, Bacup, Burnley and an engine from Greater Manchester along with the aerial ladder platform from Hyndburn, the water bowser and the command support unit from Fulwood at a commercial building fire on Commerce Street, Haslingden.

“Please avoid the area.”

A police spokesperson said:"Officers are assisting our colleagues from Lancashire Fire and Rescue with an incident at Carrs Industrial Estate in Haslingden.

"Please be aware of this incident, disruption to surrounding roads and plan your route accordingly to avoid the area. Many thanks."

In an update the fire service said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. 

A spokesperson said: "This incident has now been reduced to three fire engines, an aerial ladder platform and the hazardous materials units. Crews will remain in attendance monitoring and extinguishing any hotspots.

"A fire investigation is underway to determine the cause. The aerial ladder platform and a 45ml jet is continuing to be used dampen down the fire.
