Workmen digging on a major Blackburn route have revealed a historic cobbled road underneath.
Major work is taking place at the junction of Preston New Road and Adelaide Terrace as Cadent carry out essential works on the busy route into town.
Workers have been digging to replace the old gas pipes at the section and have removed a large amount of earth, while also revealing the historic road surface that has long been tarmacked over.
At one section the famous cobbles in Preston New Road could be seen at the junction with Adelaide Terrace.
Cobblestone, also referred to as cobbles, were most likely covered up decades ago to give road users a smoother ride.
Few cobbled roads still remain in Blackburn; among them is Wycollar Road off Revidge Road.
A number of alleyways in the town also remain cobbled but the majority have been covered over the years with tarmac.
One lane on Preston New Road remains closed and work on the road is set to continue until the end of the month.
Traffic controls were also put in place on Addison Street when work began this week.
Coincidently nearby, police forensic teams had cleared a section of area during an investigation into the death of David Read; a man has been charged with his murder and the area was cleared by officers investigating the death.
This area has been cleared of shrubs and vegetation which revealed a lost path and monument.
