Blackburn charity Rummage Rescuers is hosting a shopping event to allow students to attend prom without spending a fortune.

Prom dresses are being sold for as little as £10 as The Flower Station at Rummage Rescuers are on a mission to make prom affordable for everyone, by hosting a Prom Wear Open Evening on Friday, June 16.

The charity was made aware of the number of families struggling to afford to pay for the big occasion - a rite of passage for so many high school leavers - so the founder of Rummage Rescuers, Liz Crook, has helped to organise the shopping night with the support of local businesses.

Misty Greenwood, Flower Station manager at Rummage Rescuers said: “After listening to local families concerns about the cost-of-living crisis in Blackburn and Darwen, The Flower Station has made it their mission to make prom night more affordable.

“We have rails of beautiful formal wear that we are exchanging for donations to Rummage Rescuers.

"All donations from this event will go towards helping local families in the area with the cost of school uniforms.

“It's set to be a great event, with lots of brilliant prizes to bag all donated by local businesses.

"However, we wouldn't be able to do this without the help of the generous people from Blackburn and Darwen so please get involved whether it's donating, or buying.

“Let's give our young lads and ladies a prom night to remember, with no financial burden.”

The prom event will be held on June 16 at The Flower Station in Town Hall Street, Blackburn.

The organisation is asking for donations of evening dresses, suits, accessories, shoes and purses.

There will be drinks and nibbles available on the site, with many competition prizes to win donated by local businesses. Prizes include beauty treatments, hair ups, and floral corsages.

A post on Rummage Rescuers Facebook page says: “If you're already not aware we have rails and rails of designer formal wear in what used to be the dress shop upstairs and they're just too special to go to waste.

“We would love to use them to help local families in the area afford prom night. You could bag yourself a prom outfit for as little as £10!

“It's sure to be a fun packed evening. We have some lovely prizes kindly donated already. However, we need help from local businesses.

“If you think you would be able to donate some beauty treatments and your time to help a local non-profit company and our local young ladies and gents this prom season? We would be eternally grateful Please contact us on 01254 58147.”
